American Religions: An Illustrated History

Description:

American Religions: An Illustrated History is a brief summary of how we have arrived at this most interesting development in the human drama. The story begins at the end of the fifteenth century when Europeans discovered the continent and made their initial contacts with the more than 500 different peoples that inhabited it. There was already great diversity among the Native Americans, and the Europeans injected the different varieties of Christianity and Judaism. Here our story really begins and unfolds as the new settlers conquered the land, pushed aside its original inhabitants, and created a new society that we like to think of as the greatest nation on earth. Any account of the mosaic necessarily requires both a perspective and a considerable amount of interpretation.

Sai Baba Man of Miracles

sbtIndia has always nurtured true yogins–those who have transcended the lower self, those in whom wonder-working powers of siddhis have flourished. These powers, or some of them, have been brought into the research laboratories of the para-psychologists who call them extra-sensory perception and psycho-kinesis. Others call them miracles. Whatever the terminology, such powers and their practitioners demand sensible attention. This account relates some of the achievements of one of the most impressive men of miracles to appear in centuries. Satya Sai Baba–his followers believe him to be a reincarnation of Sai Baba of Shirdi who died in 1918–appears to have been born with phenomenal powers, which he used in childhood and has employed constantly and openly ever since. They include all the varieties of E.S.P. and P.K. known to psychic science and more besides. The author, a Westerner devoted to science and logic, spent many months with Satya Said Baba; he claims to have found that his “unscientific,” “illogical” miracles were, in fact, genuine yogic siddhis. He found, too, that along with Christ-like miraculous powers went a Christ-like love, compassion and the God-knowledge that opens the door to a new vision of life.

Is baar nahi……..Not this time…..!

Is baar jab woh choti si bachchi mere paas apni kharonch le kar aayegi
Main usey phoo phoo kar nahin behlaoonga
Panapney doonga uski tees ko
Is baar nahin

(This time when that little girl comes to me with her bruises, I will not blow gently at her wound, nor distract her, I will let her pain grow.
Not this time.)

Is baar jab main chehron par dard likha dekhoonga
Nahin gaoonga geet peeda bhula dene wale
Dard ko risney doonga, utarney doonga andar gehrey
Is baar nahin

(This time when I see pain on faces
I will not sing the song that eases pain
I will let the pain seep in, deep?.
Not this time.)

Is baar main na marham lagaoonga
Na hi uthaoonga rui ke phahey
Aur na hi kahoonga ki tum aankein band karlo, gardan udhar kar lo main dawa lagata hoon
Dekhney doonga sabko hum sabko khuley nangey ghaav
Is baar nahin

(This time I won’t apply any balm
Nor will I ask you to shut your eyes
and turn your head
While I gingerly apply medicine
I will let everyone see the open, naked wounds?
Not this time.)

Is baar jab uljhaney dekhoonga, chatpatahat dekhoonga
Nahin daudoonga uljhee door lapetney
Uljhaney doonga jab tak ulajh sake
Is baar nahin

(This time when I see difficulty, uneasiness
I will not run to solve the problems
I will let them become complicated?
Not this time.)

Is baar karm ka hawala de kar nahin uthaoonga auzaar
Nahin karoonga phir se ek nayee shuruaat
Nahin banoonga misaal ek karmyogi ki
Nahin aaney doonga zindagi ko aasani se patri par
Utarney doonga usey keechad main, tedhey medhey raston pe
Nahin sookhney doonga deewaron par laga khoon
Halka nahin padney doonga uska rang
Is baar nahin banney doonga usey itna laachaar
Ki paan ki peek aur khoon ka fark hi khatm ho jaye
Is baar nahin

(This time I won’t pick up my tools as a matter of duty
I will not make a new beginning
Nor will I stand as an example of one dedicated to my job
I will not let life easily return to normalcy
I will let it descend into muck, on the twisting paths
I will not let the blood on the walls dry out
Nor will I let its colour fade away
This time I won’t let it become so helpless
That you can’t tell blood from paan-spit
Not this time.)

Is baar ghawon ko dekhna hai
Gaur se
Thoda lambe wakt tak
Kuch faisley
Aur uskey baad hausley
Kahin toh shuruat karni hi hogi
Is baar yahi tay kiya hai

(This time the wounds need to be watched
Carefully
For a long time
Some decisions are needed
And then some brave moves to be made
We have to begin somewhere?
This time this is what I have resolved)

The Great Controversy

All humanity is now involved in a great controversy between Christ and Satan regarding the character of God, His law, and His sovereignty over the universe. This conflict originated in heaven when a created being, endowed with freedom of choice, in self-exaltation became Satan, God’s adversary, and led into rebellion a portion of the angels. He introduced the spirit of rebellion into this world when he led Adam and Eve into sin. This human sin resulted in the distortion of the image of God in humanity, the disordering of the created world, and its eventual devastation at the time of the worldwide flood. Observed by the whole creation, this world became the arena of the universal conflict, out of which the God of love will ultimately be vindicated. To assist His people in this controversy, Christ sends the Holy Spirit and the loyal angels to guide, protect, and sustain them in the way of salvation.

Through the illumination of the Holy Spirit, the scenes of the long continued conflict between good and evil have been opened to the writer of these pages. From time to time I have been permitted to behold the working, in different ages, of the great controversy between Christ, the Prince of life, the Author of our salvation, and Satan, the prince of evil, the author of sin, the first transgressor of God’s holy law.

Operation Blue Star

Operation Blue Star(June 3 to June 6, 1984)  was a code name for an Indian military operation ordered by Indira Gandhi, the then Prime Minister of India, to remove Sikh militants who had established a stronghold in the Golden Temple in Amritsar. It was one of the most inflammatory actions ever taken by the Indian government.  The operation was launched in response to a deterioration of law and order in the Punjab. The government’s reasons for a seemingly late action, its choice of day to attack and heavy army assault is still highly debated. The operation was carried out by Indian army troops with tanks and armored vehicles. Militarily successful, it is considered to be a political disaster and an un-precedented act in modern Indian history. The impact of the military assault, its aftermath and the increased tensions led to assaults on members of the Sikh community within India and uproar amongst Sikhs worldwide. In India, many Sikhs resigned from armed and civil administrative office and returned their government awards. Revenge for the desecration of the Sikh shrine was pledged by some in the Sikh community, resulting in the assassination of Indira Gandhi by her Sikh bodyguards.

The Army placed total casualties at:
Military : 83 killed, 248 wounded
Militants (including civilians): 492 Killed (30 women and 5 children), 86 wounded (7 women and 4 children).
The figure was placed by independent historians at:
Military : 700
Militants (including civilians): 5000.
According to some journalists, several Sikh youths were also killed in crossfire from militants.

Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale(February 12, 1947 – June 6, 1984)
He was the controversial leader of the Damdami Taksal, a Sikh religious group based in India, who supported the creation of the proposed Sikh theocratic state of Khalistan. He tried to spread his perceived values of Sikhism. In 1981, Bhindranwale was arrested for his suspected involvement in the murder of Jagat Narain, the proprietor of the Hind Samachar Group. He surrendered to police but was later released due to lack of evidence, however, Bhindranwale was kept on close watch by Indian police officials. Bhindranwale is more notable for his involvement in Operation Blue Star in which he and his supporters, most of them radicalized Sikhs who believed in Bhindranwale’s objectives, occupied the Akal Takht complex, including the Golden Temple, in Amritsar. He was killed by the Indian Army, who had orders from Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi to remove all armed militants inside the sacred temple. Since his death, Bhindranwale has remained a controversial figure in Indian history. Some view him as a martyr who was fighting for the best interests of Sikhs, and others see him as a militant and extremist.

Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale in the Golden Temple
Throughout his career Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale remained in contact with Indira Gandhi, who maintained the contact despite allegations. Bhindranwale had earlier taken refuge in the Golden temple in April 1980, when he was named as a suspect in the killing of Nirankari Baba Gurbachan Singh.
In 1982, Bhindranwale and approximately 200 followers moved into a guest-house called the Guru Nanak Niwas, in the precinct of the Golden Temple. From here he met and was interviewed by international television crews whilst violence in the Punjab against Hindus continued.
On 23 April 1983, the Punjab Police Deputy Inspector General (DIG) A. S. Atwal was shot dead as he left the Golden Temple compound. The following day, after the murder, Harchand Singh Longowal (then president of Shiromani Akali Dal) hinted at the involvement of the Chief minister of the Punjab, Darbara Singh, in the murder.
On October 5, 1983 and November 18, 1983, militants posing as Sikhs hijacked two buses, Sikh and Hindu passengers were separated and the Hindus shot dead. The selective murders were condemned by Bhindranwale.
When Darbara Singh resigned as chief minister of Punjab after the massacre of Hindu travellers on October 6, 1983, Bhindarwale said ” Six Hindus are killed and the (State) government has fallen. Two Hundred Sikhs have been gunned down by police and nothing has been done. This shows that to the (Central) government Hindu lives are more important than Sikh lives”.
On December 15, 1983, Bhindranwale was forced to move out of Guru Nanak Niwa’s house by members of the Babbar Khalsa who acted with Harcharan Singh Longowal’s support Longowal by now feared for his own safety. By 1983, the Golden Temple became a shelter for a large number of militants.

Mark Tully and Satish Jacob wrote:
“All … terrorists were known by name to the shopkeepers and the householders who live in the narrow alleys surrounding the Golden Temple…The Punjab police must have known who they were also, but they made no attempt to arrest them. By this time Bhindranwale and his men were above the law.”

The Golden Temple compound and some of the surrounding houses were fortified. The Statesman reported on July 4 that light machine-guns and semi-automatic rifles were known to have been brought into the compound.

On February 1, 1984, Harcharan Singh Longowal claimed that Bhindranwale had suggested to him that motorcycles and arms should be purchased on a mass scale for killing members of a ‘particular community’“. Bhindranwale angrily responded to the allegation, saying “…nothing is more farther in my mind than this “.

Faced with imminent army action and with the foremost Sikh political organisation, Shiromani Akali Dal (headed by Harchand Singh Longowal), abandoning him, Bhindranwale declared “This bird is alone. There are many hunters after it “.

Time magazine reported (about Amritsar) that:
“These days it more closely resembles a city of death. Inside the temple compound, fierce Sikh warriors wield submachine guns, guarding against encroachment by government security forces. Outside, the security men keep a nervous vigil, all too aware that the bodies of murdered comrades often turn up in the warren of tiny streets around the shrine.”

Aftermath
An unspecified number of Sikh soldiers resigned from positions across India in protest, with some reports of large-scale pitched battles being fought to bring mutineers under control. The operation also led to the assassination of Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. On October 31 of that year, two of her armed Sikh security officers murdered her. Anti-Sikh riots were triggered by Mrs Gandhi’s assassination. The widespread killing of Sikhs, principally in the national capital Delhi but also in other major cities in North India, led to major divisions between the Sikh community and the Indian Government.

General A S Vaidya, the Chief of Army Staff at the time of Operation Blue Star, was also assassinated in 1986 in Pune by two Sikhs, Harjinder Singh Jinda and Sukhdev Singh Sukha. Both were sentenced to death, and hanged on 7 October 1992.
The army was removed from the Golden Temple later in 1984 under pressure from Sikh demands.  Sikh militants continued to use and occupy the temple compound and on May 1, 1986, Indian paramilitary police entered the temple and arrested 200 militants that had occupied the Golden Temple for more than three months.
On May 2, 1986 the paramilitary police undertook an 12-hour operation to take control of the Golden Temple at Amritsar from several hundred militants, but almost all the major radical leaders managed to escape.
In May 1988, army troops were called in again to remove militants from the . The conflict during May 12-18 resulting in clearing the compound and on May 23, regular worship resumed. On May 29, the government banned both political and military use of the shrines in India. Sikh militants then murdered the head priest on July 26, 1988. In June 1990, the Indian government ordered the area surrounding the temple to be vacated by local residents to try to stop the militant activity around the temple.

What Sikh’s Say?
‘Those scars of Operation Blue Star and the aftermath of the riots will always remain.’ “The Akal Takht is a revered place for Sikhs. Sentiments of thousands of Sikhs are connected with it. The Congress government of that time brought guns and tanks into this holy site. So we are observing the day as a “Black Day,” said Giani Joginder Singh Vedanti, the head Granthi of the Akal Takht.

Today many Sikhs still do not see Bhindranwale as a terrorist. The Golden Temple has been completely rebuilt.

Only the gate adjacent the Akal Takht is yet to be repaired. Bullet marks can still be seen on the gate. In the Golden Temple museum, pictures of great Sikh leaders adorn the walls. Amid them are pictures of Indira Gandhi’s killers and a close aide of Bhindranwale.
Recently, the Amrit Sarovar was totally cleaned after Operation Blue Star, a ritual that is of paramount importance.

A shopkeeper outside the temple remarked, ‘No one will talk about those days. No one wants to expose himself,’ he says referring to the Khalistan movement. But he discreetly admits that deep down every Sikh would ‘want what they (Bhindranwale) wanted.’

Sukhdev Singh, slain chief of Babbar Khalsa, who was in Amritsar during Operation Blue Star pledged to take revenge. He took up arms and was later killed by the security forces.

What who led the operation Says?
